Innovating the form
This advanced-level online poetry course is perfect for poets looking to create new work, stretch conventions, and collaborate with other like-minded poets. Challenge your intellect and find new ways to think on your feet while developing technical precision.
The Granta course combines studying classic poetry, hyper-contemporary works, and mixed media forms, inviting you to consider how a poem works and what it could be. You will discuss difficult questions such as: How do poets generate work without relying on subject matter? Or: What does it mean to write with intention, and how do we balance the visceral and cerebral?
Learn to be both playful and rigorous, moving between experiment and reflection. In each session you will both write and edit, work on short generative exercises, and consider how poems work, on the page and in discussion. Collaborate and contribute in groups using sound files, films and collage, as well as text.
During the first half of the course you will focus on exploration, generation and collaboration, with developmental games designed to lead you towards alternative means of communication.
The second half of the course asks you to make and shape new work, combining peer review with tutor guidance as you hone your compositional skills and work towards putting together a final portfolio. You will emerge with up to 20 pages (max. 2,000 words) of a pamphlet-style collection, a sequence, or a set of discrete but related poems.
Entry is by application.
This course requires up to 10-12 hours of study per week.
