Order Report(s)

Our feedback reports are designed for students who have taken one of our shorter writing courses. They’re ideal if you’re considering taking your writing further and want a detailed review of a short piece of writing in order to understand its potential and what steps to take next.

It’s suitable if you:

  • Have completed one of our Faber Academy Fiction Skills or Beginners’ Fiction courses, or our introductions to Crime, Romance or Short Fiction
  • Have written a short story or the start of a novel and would like a more detailed, one-to-one critique of your work by a tutor
  • Are unsure what to do now with your writing and want guidance on next steps to take
  • Are considering taking an intermediate or advanced level course — such as the Faber Academy Writing a Novel or Work in Progress courses — and want to assess if you’re ready to move to the next level
  • Need honest feedback from a supportive reviewer who understands your challenges because they once faced them themselves

We tailor your feedback report to the course you completed and the genre or form you’re working in. Your report looks at your submission in terms of your ideas, your writing style, and the aspects of the craft you have worked on through the course.

Short story report

Our short story report looks at your use of the aspects of narrative you have studied in your course (character, setting, point-of-view and so forth), as appropriate, and also at your ideas, your writing style — and what you might do next to improve further.

It’s for students who’ve taken our:

  • Introduction to Writing Short Fiction course
  • Introduction to Writing Romance course
  • Introduction to Writing Crime Fiction course
  • Find Your Writing Voice: Exploring Genre course
  • Faber Academy Getting Started: Beginners’ Fiction course
  • Any of the Faber Academy Fiction Skills courses: Plot, Setting, Create Brilliant Characters, Research and Read Like a Writer

Novel report

Our novel report looks at your first chapter and a brief synopsis. It reviews the way in which you have used various narrative elements (character, setting, point-of-view and so forth) to establish a convincing story world, and looks at your ideas for developing the remainder of the novel, including ways in which you might build reader interest and encourage people to continue reading. There will be advice on what your next step should be, and whether you are ready to progress to the Faber Academy Writing a Novel (online) course.

It’s for students who’ve taken our:

  • Faber Academy Beginners’ Fiction course
  • Introduction to Writing Short fiction course
  • Introduction to Writing Romance course
  • Introduction to Writing Crime Fiction course
  • Find Your Writing Voice: Exploring Genre course

Script treatment report

Our report assesses a four-page treatment in terms of the techniques you’ve absorbed during one of our John Yorke Story courses — five-act structure, inciting incident, midpoint, turning points, scene-by-scene change and so on — as well as how engaging your protagonist and setting is. Your tutor will also give notes on the likely reception your idea might get and where to take your story next.

It’s for students who’ve taken our:

  • Story for Screen (Drama) course
  • Story for Factual TV course
  • Story for Business course
  • Story for Script Development course
  • Story for Games course

It costs £120 + VAT for one feedback report on one piece of writing of up to 3,000 words or one 4-page treatment, or £210 + VAT for two reports on two pieces of writing of up to 3,000 words each or two 4-page treatments.

You can mix-and-match your submissions. For example, you may choose to receive reports on two short stories or choose to receive one on a short story and one on a novel.

What our students say...

The notes in the final report were gratefully received and very meaningful to me after such all-out effort during the course. Both tutors were very constructive in their appraisals of my idea and David, in particular, so detailed with his notes.

What our students say...

The end-of-course feedback report was fantastically helpful — I’m already at my desk, working on the next version of my treatment.

Norman

What our students say...

I’m really chuffed with the feedback, especially pointing out where my ideas are not working and the suggestions for how to develop the story now are invaluable. I have a couple of weeks off now so this has come at a good time to spur me on to rework what I’ve done so far.

What our students say...

I’ve attended lots of different courses and workshops and its incredibly rare to get such detailed and focused advice that genuinely revolutionises how you approach your work.

What our students say...

The feedback report in particular was very useful. I have learned a lot, and I have loved it. I know I still have quite a bit of work to do, but I don’t mind hard work. All the feedback and encouragement has been extremely valuable. I feel much more confident about tackling difficult story lines than I ever have done before.
