What is habit stacking?
Habit stacking is the act of attaching a new habit to one already embedded in your life. You’re more likely to remember and repeat something if it’s linked to an existing routine.
Take tea, for example. If you’re a tea drinker, popping the kettle on is second nature. Why not use that built-in pause as writing time?
Keep a notebook by the tea bags and use those minutes to:
- Jot down new ideas
- Sketch a scene
- Untangle a knotty plot point.
Still waiting for your tea to cool? Perfect, scribble a few lines. Over time, every time you reach for the kettle, you’ll also reach for your writing.
Find your moments
Of course, it doesn’t have to be tea. You can stack writing onto almost any daily habit:
- Morning pages
- Before/after going for a walk
- Before/after playing Wordle
- During a commute (provided you’re not the one driving!)
- While watching TV (grab a notebook to jot down thoughts, phrases or draw)
- As part of your nighttime routine.
Each of these moments can become a pocket of creative time. Little chunks soon add up.
